Practice makes perfect.... although perfection is so over-rated!

Hi! My name is Mel Nott, and welcome to my photography blog!

My experience with photography first started many years ago when I would quite happily take snaps of anything and anyone, the result being me having dozens of boxes of photographs tucked away in my house, only ever to be looked at again when I am feeling that tug of nostalgia that we all experience.... thankfully in these times of digital photography a whole new world has opened up to me and I am falling in love with photography all over again. I love natural light photography, but am also dabbling in studio work.

After having my four children, who are my treasures, and being lucky enough to be married to a wonderful, supportive and devoted husband, I am now finding little windows of opportunity to explore and experiment with my photos. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I loved capturing them! They are moments that I never wish to forget.......

Capturing the essence of everday life - from pregnancy to birth, newborns, children & families! Professional portraits that reflect the true spirit of your family. Cherished memories never to be forgotten!

No need to purchase a single printed photograph! I charge a flat fee package and provide my clients with all images on cd/dvd. The value is just amazing! No over-priced photo packages or expensive reprints - just the gorgeous photos you want, as you want, when you want. And they are yours to keep!

I am based in Perth, so please feel free to email me at forget-me-nott@live.com if you would like to arrange a session.

Oh, and leave me a comment from time to time - I like to know I am not just talking to myself....

Straight from the camera.....

For those of you that don't know, I don't actually have Photoshop - although I am in the process of obtaining it.... therefore I just use a little free program that Christie got for me called Filtre.... it is very basic editing, in fact so basic it is sometimes not even worth doing!

These photos have only had a frame put around them and one edit - auto contrast - and I have greyscaled a couple of them, otherwise they are completely raw..... so I was quite pleased with them, although I am having trouble with my focusing - both auto and manual never seem to give me a really clear shot, even with the tripod... maybe it is my lens as it looks clear through the lens when I focus... I will have to look into it.

And a self-indulgent self-portrait that I got Christie to take!

New cool stuff!

I was fortunate enough recently to be able to purchase some lights and some really funky silver umbrella thingys, together with backrops etc. so as I had the day off today and obviously had nothing at all better to do (yeah right!) I had a play with Pippa, who unlike Layla is a most willing participant and will do anything for a biscuit......
This is the set-up I had today:

And here are a couple of shots - not much editing done, just very basic.

Layla

I went around to Jody's house last Saturday and we mucked around with a backdrop - the lighting was pretty crap but we did okay, although our "subjects" weren't being very co-operative and it cost me $5 to have Layla sit there and pose for us LOL

Here is probably my best (and favourite) shot from the day.

Brother and Sister

Evan loves his little baby sister Pippa - from the moment she was born he has just adored her - as you can tell from their bath together tonight she adores him as well!

Night photos

A few shots that I took last night - my first attempt at slow shutter speeds and night photography - most impressed I was! I haven't edited these shots at all -they are straight from the camera.

Lens 32mm ISO 100 F5.7 ss 15" exp 0.0

Lens 31mm ISO 100 F11 ss 4" exp 0.0

Lens 38mm ISO 100 F16 ss 4" exp 0.0

This was of an ambulance which kindly came to attend the drunk over the road! Crazy psycho shot!

Lens 55mm ISO 100 F5.6 ss 4" exp 0.0

This was weird in that I shortened the lens over 4 seconds - great effect I think!

Layla

Layla decided to put her "party dress" on (she wore it on her last birthday) so I decided that the sun was setting quite nicely so went for a walk down the park. We are so fortunate that we have a beautiful lake near us, and only about 100 metres from our house - actually we have two but I went to the closer one!

I love the colour of this dress. I know some of the photos are a bit sunny, but hey, I'm learning! Plus I shoot what I like.

Clicked....

And not just the camera!! I really think I had an epiphony tonight whilst I was doing some assignment work.... truly ruly I did! Something just clicked and instantly I kinda sorta knew what I was doing.

Now I just have to remember it......

Bathtime

I have put these few shots in here so I can look back and hopefully see some improvement! As I don't have photoshop yet these have just had the bare minimum of basic post-editing.

I was quite happy with the bath ones as the light is pretty crappy in the bathroom.... and I like that they are not quite in focus..... gives them that something special! Well I will tell myself that anyway, or else I will be carrying my tripod around with me everywhere!

It's started!

Bugger that I have been in Sydney since Wednesday... I am hanging to get home on Friday so I can start playing around with all my newfound knowledge!!!!!

The first lesson was great - there were about 13-14 people in the class, and they were all in the same boat as Jody and I - in that we have these lovely and expensive fandangled cameras but don't really know how to use them...... our instructor is great, and he has a Nikon D80 just like me!!! No doubt I shall become the teacher's pet LOL

I did a little "shoot" the other day of Shell's kids at the playground but it was a bit miserable and drizzling, but I got a few nice shots. Once I edit them I will pop a couple on here.

YAY!

Getting my camera back tomorrow. Happy happy joy joy!!!!!

Am doing my first proper "shoot" for Shell on the weekend of her 4 kids - two girls, two boys.... they are beautiful kids so I hope I can bring that out in my photos.
